Manage guardians in your domain (2025)

This article is for Google Workspace Administrators. Teachers go here.

Guardians can get email summaries of their student’s work and progress in a class. For Edu Plus SKUs, guardians can also get preview capabilities of their student’s work within Classroom.

As the Google Workspace administrator, you can:

  • Allow guardian features for your school or district.
  • Give teachers permission to invite or remove guardians.

Guardians who sign up for email summaries can’t see the Stream, Classwork, People, or Grades pages in Classroom.

Turn guardian features on or off

By default, guardian access is turned on for K–12 schools. Guardian access is turned off for higher education institutions.

When access is turned on, guardians are linked to their student and can:

  1. Sign in with an administrator account to the GoogleAdminconsole.

    If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.

  2. From the Admin console Home page, choose an option:
    • If you’re using Google Workspace for Education or Workspace for Nonprofits, click Apps Manage guardians in your domain (1) Google Workspace Manage guardians in your domain (2) Classroom.
    • If you’re using Workspace Basic, Business, or Google Workspace for Education Plus, click Apps Manage guardians in your domain (3) Additional Google services Manage guardians in your domain (4)Classroom.
  3. Click General settings.
  4. Under Guardian access, click Allow parents and guardians to access Classroom information.

Tip: If students in domains on the allow list join your classes, those domains must turn on guardian features so teachers can invite the student’s guardians. Learn how to configure class settings.

Manage who can invite and remove guardians

  1. Sign in with an administrator account to the GoogleAdminconsole.

    If you aren’t using an administrator account, you can’t access the Admin console.

  2. Choose one:
    • If you’re using Google Workspace for Education or Workspace for Nonprofits, click Apps Manage guardians in your domain (5) Google WorkspaceManage guardians in your domain (6) Classroom.
    • If you’re using Workspace Basic, Business, or Google Workspace for Education Plus, click Apps Manage guardians in your domain (7) Additional Google services Manage guardians in your domain (8) Classroom.
  3. Click General settings Manage guardians in your domain (9) Guardian access.
  4. Under Who can manage parents and guardians?, choose an option:
    • All verified teachers
    • Only domain administrators
  5. Click Save.

Invite or remove guardians in your domain

To invite or remove guardians in bulk for your domain, choose an option:

  • Use GAM, a command line tool for managing Google Workspace domains and users, to invite guardians in bulk via CSV, view a list of current guardians, and remove guardians. Learn more

Note: The maximum number of guardians that can be assigned to a student is 20.
